April – the sun rises higher and higher on the horizon

For “the locals”, April is the best winter month. The snow and ice situation is safe while the sun is seriously warming.

The reindeer are preparing for the calving during the spring.

If the month of March offered the spring equinox, then April offers the increasingly longer days. The morning comes earlier, the evening comes later. In one week, the day becomes almost an hour longer and the white nights get closer and closer.

The ices are safe, in safe areas

When winter upclosing its end, local knowledge is required to be able to travel safely on the ice. The river is still covered in ice, until the end of April. Where the archipelago is protected from winds, the ice is safe while the waters exposed to southerly winds may have fully opened up. The variations are large from year to year and it is important to read ice and to follow the weather and wind to travel safely on the ice.
