March - the cold bites but during the day the temperature rises

During the month of March, what we in northern Scandinavia call the “snow spring” begins. We have a perfect snow cover that can be meters thick but not as light and fluffy snow as in February.

On snowshoes and skis you are carried up and the feeling is like floating on the snow.

We discover the archipelago on snowmobiles

For ice fishermen, the peak season begins with days that get longer and longer. The ice is so thick that some people take the car out to the fishing spots, if only a thick layer of snow does not stop it.

For those who like snowmobiles, this is the best month. It can get really cold at night but during the day the temperature rises with the sun sparkling in the snow. The weather can vary and offer both thaw weather and dozens with minus degrees – during the same day.

The reindeers are preparing for spring

In the wild, wildlife wakes up and the Scandinavian hare have hard times leaving tracks everywhere. The wide open space of the Gulf of Bothnia can be completely covered in ice, but it is safest to stay inside among the archipelago’s islands.

The work to keep the reindeer strong and healthy is going on as always and the reindeer themselves are preparing for spring and giving birth to reindeer calves.

For those looking for the Northern Lights, or Aurora, March offers fantastic conditions. When the air pressure rises, the sky is kept free of clouds and there are good chances to see the Northern Lights dance across the sky. The Northern Lights are nothing for the evening-weary. Our excursions to catch the Northern Lights starts a couple of hours before midnight.
